A Guide on Making AI- Resistant Writing Assignments
In the K-12 classroom, we are constantly seeing the rise of AI used to complete assignments. As an ELA educator, I have seen this first hand and the frustrations that teachers face when trying to put their foot down about AI usage without burdening their workload. When teachers turn to their instructional leaders, the answer often reverts back to basics of asking them to write everything on paper, and while yes, that does work to an extent, it misses the core of the issue: Our assignment prompts aren’t AI resistant. This course is designed for instructional leaders who need help guiding teachers on how to make their writing assignments AI resistant.
The main thing I wanted for this course was to make it easy to grasp and apply. To accomplish this, I broke the course down into three modules that had clear learning objectives. Each learning objective was crafted to cover a specific need for instructional leaders when it comes to addressing it with their teachers and peers. Then, every module is broken up into varying parts to keep learners engaged. In Module 3, I wanted instructional leaders to actually apply the framework for making assignments AI-resistant, so they would feel comfortable with doing the same in real-world scenarios, so I gave them prompts that needed to be improved in order to be AI-resistant.
By the end of the course, my goal was to equip learners with the language they need to articulate why making assignments AI-resistant is valuable beyond upholding academic integrity. I wanted instructional leaders to understand that there is more at stake, so they would be more willing to think about ways to help mediate this growing issue within our schools. Alongside the language, leaders should also walk away with a framework that is applicable in their buildings and the knowledge to apply it. But what I am most proud of in this course is that it is universal and concrete – no matter the context, instructional leaders are given a resource that can be a starting point for making writing AI-resistant.
